Heat pumps for Boca Raton’s long cooling season
In South Palm Beach County, a heat pump is usually the right whole-home system: months of cooling and moisture removal, plus enough heat for cool January mornings. We treat it as cooling equipment first.

No cool
Look outside. If the condenser is silent, check the breaker and the disconnect next to the unit. If the fan is running and the air at the vent is warm, or the breaker trips again, stop resetting it and call. That is a part, a coil, or a safety switch — not another thermostat click.

Humidity
A house can hit 74 and still feel wet. Dropping it to 68 just makes it run longer. Note which rooms feel clammy and whether it short-cycles. Airflow, runtime, and the drain come before a dehumidifier or a new system.

Clogged drain
Water in the air-handler closet, or a system that starts and then dies, is often the condensate line. Shut it off if water is on the floor. A simple clog sometimes clears from the outside pipe. If it comes back this week, the trap or the slope needs a look.
Why heat pumps fit this coast
Boca homes cool far more than they heat. A heat pump that removes moisture on an August afternoon and still warms a January morning is the usual replacement path — not a northern furnace paired with a summer-only AC.
Sizing still follows the house: glass, orientation, duct condition, and how clammy rooms feel today. A Broken Sound floor plan and a Boca Del Mar ranch do not share a default tonnage.
Repair versus replace on a heat pump
Capacitors, contactors, reversing valves, and sensors fail on heat pumps the same way they fail on straight cool systems. We diagnose those first. When the compressor or coil is done, we talk replacement with clear scopes.
Process and electrical notes
A heat pump that will not cool is an AC repair until the equipment says otherwise. New installs confirm pad, line set, drain, and the electrical circuit. Older Boca panels sometimes need capacity work before a larger heat pump lands — we say that before equipment is ordered.
